Debra was a woman who was not afraid to live her best life, and when faced with the end, she accepted it with grace. Debra was admitted to Hospice and was introduced to The Living Wish Foundation. When asked what her wish would be, she did not hesitate. She had grown up going to cottages and swimming in the lake, and she wanted to experience this one more time with her niece and a close girlfriend. Her niece lived on the East Coast and was already busy booking her flight.
Although we worked quickly, and Debra’s niece flew in just days later, time was not on our side. Debra’s condition deteriorated quickly, and it was apparent that a cottage trip was not possible. So, we started planning a local day trip. Again, Debra’s condition deteriorated quickly.
On Debra’s last day, she was in and out of consciousness, her niece and best girlfriend by her side. Although to some, it may seem we missed our opportunity to grant Debra’s wish… The Living Wish Foundation still had an impact. Because on that last day, Debra kept talking about going to the cottage. With a soft smile, she asked her niece if she was coming with her. In Debra’s mind, she was on her way.
